Keeping Tarps Clean

If a tarp does its job right, chances are it is going to get a little bit dirty. It can also get grimy, filmy, soiled, and crusty from the multitudes of things falling from the sky and blowing around in the wind and up off the ground. To help keep them in the proper working order, a simple suggestion is to take a few moments and a little effort to Clean Tarps.

Tarps are crafted from a diverse spectrum of materials including vinyl, canvas, mesh, plastic, and nylon. Each will have its own approach and techniques along with different types of cleaners in ridding of the dirty stuff. These tasks will assist in their proper protection and longevity of usefulness. It is very important to clean and dry your tarps before you are ready to put them in storage.

What to Do

The first thing to do is to spread the tarp out smooth and flat. A Tarp can be quite large, if you cannot lay it out flat, try working on the tarp in sections. The next step is to sweep off and even pick off the excess pieces of dirt and other muck sticking around.

At this point, it is time to prepare to clean the tarp by using dedicated Tarp Cleaners that are formulated for a variety of tarps depending on the type of materials. These solutions are safe for the fabrics and very effective at removing the dirt and contaminates that have collected over time. Another option is to use mild dish soap or environmentally friendly biodegradable cleaners (especially if you are cleaning in grass areas, near plants, pets, or people).

Use the manufactures guidelines when using the tarp cleaners. If you are opting for kitchen soap, dilute the detergent with warm water and apply the solution generously then allow it to sit for 10 to 20 minutes to help break up the layers of dirt.

Use your soap as you see fit, liberally using an average scrub brush on heavy and troubled areas of the tarp. Power washers can be used on lower settings. It is important not to damage the material including affecting the protective coatings applied to many covers. A common garden hose will typically do the job in loosening dirt build-up and rinsing the tarps clear of dirt and soap.

It is also very important to be cautious when scrubbing and spraying around the grommets (eyelets) on the perimeters of the tarps. These inserts can be damaged if handled improperly.

Dry and Assess your Tarps

Once the Tarp is clean and rinsed off it is important to allow it to dry completely. Hang it over a line or two or across fixtures. A little creativity and maneuvering may be necessary to find the right drying space. Make sure to flip over to tarp in order to dry on both sides.

Finally, after the tarp is completely dry give the cover a good once over on both sides to locate any wears, tears, punctures, holes, or abrasions. Make sure to inspect the grommets conditions also. If there are any issues, fix accordingly before reusing or storing.
