Preparing Your Tarps for Storage

As the cold weather is here, it is the time to pack up and put away your vehicles, boats, equipment, and supplies for the winter. This includes your basic and Heavy Duty Tarps and Covers. There are a few easy steps to take in Preparing your Tarps for Storage that will go a long way in preserving and extending their usefulness and longevity.

Clean the Tarps

An important first step is to clean your tarps and covers. Storing dirty, grimy, or wet tarps will lead to odor, mold, mildew, and material weakening issues.

To start with, spread out the tarps and remove the dirt and other substances that are present. After cleaning off the dirt, wash the covers with tarp cleaners, mild dish soap, or even just warm water on both sides. Do not brush or scrub too hard, not to damage the tarps or affect the special applied features that include fire resistant coatings. Rinse completely on both sides with a hose.

Just as vital as it is to clean the tarps, it is important to make sure that they are dried thoroughly before putting them away. Spread them out and if possible, hang them up, flipping over after a while to dry completely on both sides. Wet tarps in storage are susceptible to mold and mildew along with nasty odors. The damp material can also become compromised.

Repairing

This is an ideal time, while the tarps are spread out and drying, to check for rips, tears, and other damage that might be occurring. At this point, repair the damaged areas with tarp tape, tarp glue, or sewing. Ensure everything is tight and dry before proceeding to storage.

Storing

After drying and repairing the tarps and covers it is recommended to neatly fold or roll them up to store in a safe and orderly manner. Now it is time for storage.

The space that you choose for storing should be off the ground and away from walls, situated in cool and dry areas. It is best for the covers to avoid heat, humidity, and direct sunlight. Exposure to these hazards will contribute to weakening and damage to the tarps and covers.

Once you determine the space for the storing, try to not cram or bunch the tarps too closely, doing this will lead to deep creases along with possible tears and rips.

Popular areas for storage of tarps and covers are garages, basements, utility rooms, storage areas, storage buildings, warehouses, stock rooms, and many other places.
