Tarp Tape for Repairs

Tarp Repair Tape: Part One of the series

Mother Nature is a nurturing and beautiful force. At the same time, she can be rough on things including your tarps. You use these protective covers to shield your equipment, materials, and areas from the effects of wind, rain, and snow amongst other threats; yet occasionally some damage may occur. Whether it is from natural causes or unnatural intervention, rips and tear can happen. Mending these issues as fast as possible can help enhance and extend the life of your covers. This piece is the first of a series of suggestions on How To Repair Tarps, where we explan how to use Tarp Repair Tape.

The most common impairment that you may encounter are small rips and tears that occur from a foreign object poking or falling on your tarps as well as some weathering. These can easily, quickly, and effectively be repaired with Tarp Repair Tape.

Tarp Repair Tape

Tarp Repair Tape is a specialized tape that works ideally in fixing rips, tear, and small holes in your polyethylene (poly), vinyl, and canvas covers. Upon looking at this type of adhesive strip, you may ask what is the difference of it to Duct Tape? It has a poly coating over a poly weave pattern that when applied creates a waterproof hold that is as strong and sturdy as the tarp itself. The adhesive qualities form a durable and long-lasting bond. Duct tape, although strong and waterproof, is a cloth backed composite that will break down much much faster in the sun and with temperature fluctuations.

A variety of Tarp Tape colors are available to match to your tarps appearance, especially the poly tarp tape including the clear rolls that can be used on all colors.

How To Repair Tarps – With Tarp Repair Tape

  1. Inspect and evaluate the damage. In addition to obvious tear and rips, look for weakening material.
  2. Trim frayed and torn edges with scissors or a blade.
  3. Clean the area to be repaired with warm water, and preferably a tarp cleaner or mild dish soap. Completely dry the area before continuing.
  4. Peel the tape and apply it over the tear keeping the damaged area as close to the middle of the tape material as possible. Put down an inch or two of material before and after the tear when applying. The repair is most effective when both sides (top and bottom) of the tear are covered. A second layer of tape can be placed upon the first for a stronger bond.
  5. Firmly administer pressure up and down the taped area with your hands or a smooth cloth to ensure there are no air pockets or seams in the adhesive.
  6. Apply mild heat or set in the sun for a short period of time for best adhesive bonding results.
  7. The tarp is now good to go.
