Why is my tarp smaller than the size specified?

The specified size is the cut size of the fabric.  Cut size is the size of the tarp when the fabric is cut and before the final cover or tarp is made.  After the hems of fabric are folded and stitched and seams are made, the finished cover size of the tarp is slightly smaller than the actual cut size.  Cut size is the tarp industry standard measurement.  Cut size measures approximately 3-5% smaller than the actual finished size. This does not pertain to custom size tarps and covers, but only to the standard tarp sizes.

What is a Poly Tarp made of?

A polypropylene tarp ("Poly Tarp") is not a traditional fabric, but rather, a laminate of woven and sheet material.  The center is loosely woven from strips of polypropylene plastic, with sheets of the same material bonded to the surface.  This creates a fabric-like material that resists stretching well in all directions and is waterproof.  When treated against ultraviolet light, these tarpaulins can last for years exposed to the elements, but non-UV treated material will quickly become brittle and lose strength and water resistance if exposed to sunlight.  Most import Poly tarps are non-UV treated.

Are all tarps and covers flame retardant?

No.  Please check the specs on each tarp to see if the tarp is flame retardant.

Are all tarps the same?

No.  Tarps have huge performance differences.  Generally you get what you paid for when you shop for tarps and covers.  The Made in the USA tarps are a much better tarp than import tarps and will last longer.  Even though the weights and thicknesses may be the same, Made in the USA fabrics and tarps last longer.

Can I use a treated canvas tarp indoors?

Treated canvas tarps are not recommended for indoors use because the tarp's wax and dye treatment may rub off and stain indoor surfaces, such as carpet, wood floor, etc.  Also, the treated canvas tarp has an odor.  For indoor tarps, consider Vinyl Tarps, Poly Tarps, Untreated Canvas, Nylon Tarps and Mesh Tarps.  Also consider if you need a Flame Retardant Tarp.
